Our feature article is worth a read even if you think your smart setup is jus t fine. Then there’s Matter – the supposedly unifying stand ard that’s been slow to evolve and take hold, but is gaining tract ion now and is now far easier to use than it once was. The great thing about smart devices today is that almost al l are compatible with the big ecosystems, but adding new gear in isn’t always simple. Each obviously has pros and cons, and it’s important to make the right choice from the outset. Each of the major players (Google, Alexa and Apple ) are exa mined, along with a few other options you may not have looked into. That’s why we’ve tackled the topic in this issue. Choosing which smart ecosystem to invest in, though, is a bit of a minefield. This is pretty basic, and I know that almost all modern heaters and air-con units do this a nd more with inbuilt smarts, but it thrills me (seriously!) to be able to extend the life of these decent old beasts for a almost insignificant $15 spend. Now via a couple of smart plugs (I’m using TP Link Tapo plugs), I can start them up remotely on a cold night on the way home, so it’s toasty inside when I arrive. For example, I have a couple of very ancient radiator heaters that work well, are relatively efficient, and yet, dumb. Sorry for that awful word, by the way… Anyhow. This way some particularly ancient tech can be smartified. I’ve been adding smart plugs and power boards to various devices in my home, lately.
